CLARK COUNTY RADIO CONTROL SOCIETY
announces its
"ALL-UP!" FLY-IN

Event Date:  Sunday, June 13th, 2010
Host:           John Shirron
Host Contact: John's Email
Participants:  All club members and guests with AMA registration
Start Time:  Pilot's Meeting at 8:45, flying starts at 9 AM

Our raffle director John Shirron has announced his intentions for our "All-Up" fun fly.  Join your fellow club members in bringing your flyable planes, hanger queens, and anything with wings and an engine to this unique event!  Pictures will be taken of our complete inventory - should be a lot of fun!

Here's a list of events he has planned currently:

1. Speed Trap: Plane flies a straight course three times through the radar trap. The 3 speeds are averaged and the highest speed wins

2. Sudden Death:  Pilot takes off and circles in pattern until an unknown time period passes. Time starts at an audible signal, and pilot must land as soon as possible. Landing must be on runway. Time stops when wheels touch the runway. Low time wins.

3. Dead-Stick Landing:  There are squares painted on the runway.  Pilot takes off, gains altitude and kills engine.  Land and roll to the squares.

4. Precision Touch and Go:  There are squares painted on the runway.  The object is to do three touch and goes within the squares, without touching the ground outside the squares.  You get six passes to get as many touches as you can.  Points are awarded for the squares your touchdown in.

5. Hands Off aka "Cojones of Steel:"  Pilot has one minute from takeoff to trim for "hands-free" flight. At the end to the first minute, the TX is laid on a table.  Longest time before having to grab the transmitter wins!

6. Taxi Races (Alternate Event):  Pilot taxis plane around cones on either end of the runway. Fastest time wins.

7. HOR Combat:  Anybody who wants to can fly a combat event at the end so bring a .15 size HOR (or close equivalent and let's cut some ribbon!)

June 16, 2010 By John Shirron

The day was sunny but windy as almost a dozen pilots prepared to compete in the day's events. A total of 6 events were scheduled but one was called off due to the high winds.

The first event was all about speed and Stuart Hall showed us his Big Stik 40 was more than capable with an average speed of 84.3 MPH with a top speed of 88 MPH.  Dave Agar’s 4-Star was second with an average speed of 80.3 mph and a top speed of 84 MPH.  John Shirron was third with his T-34 Mentor and a top speed of 86 MPH and an average speed of 79 MPH.  There were grumblings afterwards with some participants complaining that their aircraft did not reach its maximum speed due to “technical issues”.  The only valid complaint was from Luis when his "Whats-its" developed "flutter" and impacted the ground at almost 74 MPH!

The second event was called “Sudden Death” and was won by Lamar Pace when he brought his plane in for landing in 9.42 seconds.  Luis Munoz was 2nd with 9.47 seconds and John Shirron was third with 10.3 seconds.

The third event required precision skills while landing on a marked spot on the runway with a dead engine.  John Shirron won the competition with 5 points (he barely made the runway).  Stuart Hall and Ted Atmore both missed the runway but were within 5 feet of it. Everybody else landed further away than that.

The precision "Touch and Go" event allowed the pilot have three passes to touch their wheels on marked spots on the runway.  Luis Munoz came in first with 23 points, Lamar Pace was second with 20 points and John Shirron was third with 13 points.

The last event, "Taxi Races," tested the pilot’s skill in taxiing from one end of the runway to the other. John Shirron finished with a time of 36.81 seconds, Dave Anderson was next with 51.89 seconds and Lamar Pace was third with 1:30.5.

After tallying all the scores, John Shirron was the overall winner with 44 points, Lamar Pace was 2nd with 37 points and Stuart Hall came in 3rd.  Rounding out the top five were Luis Munoz and Dave Anderson with 32 and 20 points. Prizes will be awarded at the next meeting.

I would like to thank Amy Pace for her help with registration; scoring and the occasional photograph (Ask her about the scrapbook she made for Lamar and his planes, Very Cool).

Thanks to all who braved the wind and sun and participated in all the events. I hope you all had a great time!!!

Webmaster note:  Overall, it was a great turnout for the day, considering a strong and variable breeze that vexed some fliers - like me!  I was very pleased with the participation from club members, as well as having several visitors check us out.  One flier present, Josh Dailey has committed to joining our club!  Kudos to John for setting this all up - as usual, his good nature and superb organizational skills made this event fun and hassle-free.  Thanks for a great event John!
