“Wet Wings” at Tug Lake Recap

When I was enjoying piloting small aircraft, I would occasionally fly long-distance routes, flying at high altitudes in a Cessna.  Of course, when you fly that high you sometimes find yourself above the clouds!  When that happens – you’re forced to shoot a hole through the cloud cover to reach the ground and make a safe landing.

The weather for Saturday April 23rd – the first day of “Wet Wings” at Tug Lake was like that!  After months of lousy northwest rain, we “shot the clouds” and were greeted with a gorgeous spring day, providing an absolutely perfect arena for flying our float planes!

This first annual event was attended by twelve members of Clark County Radio Control Society, six members from the Portland Skyknights club, and five members from the Thurston County club!  About twelve of us met for breakfast at an Orchards area restaurant, then it was off to the lake!  The pilot’s meeting was held on time, with coffee and doughnuts provided by Tom Ries of the Portland Skyknights club.

All types of aircraft were flown that morning – including Cubs and some fun fly’s  and a What’s It.  A beautiful Norseman gained a lot of attention, and a 1/3 scale Cub was flown over the lake with a movie camera!  Watch our website at www.clarkflyers.com for those reels, as well as many other pictures taken by our club photographer Ken Blanding.  And oh yes, we did get some wings wet!

A successful event like this does not happen automatically, and in that regard I have to thank club members Luis Munoz and Matt Williams for their undying support and encouragement, as well as Jerry Holcomb, Larry Tate and non-member Corky Rolander for their technical assistance and advice.

My personal thanks for helping to make this event so organized and popular are extended to my wife Holly Anderson for running the registration desk, Lee Faller and my son David for piloting the rescue boats, Jason Webberley and Larry Tate for providing the rescue boats, and of course, Steve and Dawn Adams (lake owners) for agreeing to make it all possible!

Not to mention all you fine fliers that showed up and had a great time!  Thanks so much!

Come back next week for links to all the pics and more information.  I can provide exclusive photos if you're looking for a specific shot - let me know!

Gates will open at 8 AM Saturday - please don't arrive any sooner - you will not have access.  I have found there is a small snack shop at the golf course across the street - sodas, chips, candy, etc.  There will be four pilot's stations set up.  Frequency control will be managed. . . not sure at this time about impound.  .  . I think we'll propose it at the pilot's meeting for reaction.  We'll have visitors from Thurston County, as well as the Fern Prairie and Skyknights clubs!  Bring cheap tarps for ground cover - a good idea!!

Final discussions were conducted last Sunday with the owner.  Details on parking, flying patterns, pilots' stations and other requirements will be provided at the field.   We'll have two rescue boats available, and designated attendents for the boats.  We're expecting 15 - 20 fliers, and I do expect to set up frequency control.  An impound station requirement will be discussed at the pilots' meeting - so please be there at 8:45 that morning!  Please remember that at this time, there is no rain date available to us.  We'll fly if it's possible - so a light rain should not stop us - field conditions, i.e. saturated grass could be an issue.

Skyknights have promised coffee and doughnuts for the fliers!  Bring your bag lunch - there are no food facilities available.  Portable toilets will be available.

Please note:  I've been asked about visitors at this event.   Please understand we are effectively "on probation."  This is an opportunity for us to use the lake and determine if we want to continue to fly there.  More importantly, the owner of the lake facility will be observing our operation, conduct, and safety.  I would encourage to hold outside visitors to a minimum. . . in my mind, that means family and fellow fliers are welcome. . . but we will not want a group of visitors to attend.  There are no facilities for visitors, and no appropriate safety zone for their protection.  The general public will not be allowed on site.

LOOK AT THIS!!!  Meet us for breakfast at the Shari's restaurant on the corner of 76th St and 117th Ave in Vancouver at 7 AM!  (Fred Meyer's shopping center)

Discussion has been levied in regards to the size of aircraft we'll be able to operate.  The concensus is to keep the size to .60 and below.  This decision is resolved in that the field is still unproven or attempted.  We want to limit the fly-over area for now.

Address location listed above has been verified.  Rain date will have to be reconsidered, as that Sunday is Easter.  Bring lawn chairs and shade tents if needed.  No competition event is planned at this time. . . just fun on the water.

The owner/operator of the field has agreed to a lower landing fee: $15!!  Water is available, as is electrical power if needed.  Let's have some fun!!

Would you like to try your hand at flying float planes, but find that available fields are just too far away??  Now's the time, and this is the place!  This lake is wonderfully smooth, small, but plenty large enough for our planes - lake dimensions are 2200' long by 200" wide!  It is located just off a paved county road and easily attained from SR 14 or Fourth Plain Blvd between Camas and Vancouver, WA.

Tug Lake is located just eight miles from the I-205 Glen Jackson bridge.  It's fully accessible, and promises to be a very promising venue for us if we would like to set up a couple of events here each year.  This will be the first float fly for the owner of the lake, and it will be up to us to show him how exciting and fun this hobby can be, as well as to show him the nature of the people that fly.

I would like interested fliers to join us for a few hours and try out the host site.  Just come out and fly and have fun!  (Update:  Skyknights RC Flying Club has agreed to set up a competition format for this event!) Come out and have some fun with us!

Note:  One down-side are the geese!  (Geese leave deposits!)  You might want to bring your shoe cozies!!

Directions:  Tug Lake is located off NE 199th Ave (or Ingles Rd), just south of Fourth Plain Blvd, east of Vancouver, WA.  Follow Fourth Plain Blvd eastbound from the intersection with NE 117th Ave (Battle Ground Hwy/SR 500).  Beyond NE 162nd Ave, Fourth Plain becomes NE 58th St.  The intersection of NE 58th St and NE 199th Ave features Langley's wrecking yard/towing on the SW corner of the intersection.  Turn right (south) on NE 199th Ave (which becomes NE Ingles Rd) and continue about two miles - you'll see the lake in the valley on the west side of the road.  Look for the mortor/stucco wall at the entrance that says 'Tug Lake.'

If from the south:  Fourth Plain is  reachable from I-205 northbound by taking exit 30B onto SR 500, and following the signs eastbound.  Fourth Plain is the first light off 205, so turn right and follow above directions.  Follow this road for approximately 4.5 miles.

If from the north:  From I-205 southbound, take the SR 500 exit 30 east bound, and follow the above instructions.

From West Vancouver:  Follow SR 500 east and connect with Fourth Plain per above instructions.
