"Park Scale" Herr Models Piper Cherokee

This Cherokee is a beautiful model, made by Herr Models, and can still be found on SIG Manufacturing's website:  www.sigmfg.com for less than $50.00!  The kit features all laser-cut parts, which is something I'd really like to try sometime.  The wing design is far advanced and allows for very graceful landings ( when conditions are right ).  I found my particular model a couple of years ago when visiting an estate auction in Oregon.   The minute I saw it, I had to have it!

This model was already built when I found it, and was powered by an old Wasp .049 engine - a real screamer, and unfortunately, quite  finicky !  Never could get that older engine to run properly, so I ordered in a newer model .049, and was able to get it off the ground for a few successful flights.  I was pretty disappointed, however, in that the three-channel controls were just not up to handling the plane like I'd like in the crosswinds we get out the field sometimes.  Scale maneuvers were jerky and sometimes unpredictable.  And the nitro gas - good grieft!  It get everywhere!  The exhaust was a problem with the engine too - had to be a little creative in managing that mess.

One afternoon a cross-breeze got the best of me and I missed my landing, rolling off to the northwest from the runway and hitting the blackberry brambles near the helicopter pad out there.  It survived nicely, although I had a break in the leading edge of the left wing.  I decided to put it away in favor of other projects, and vowed I would find a way to put some ailerons on it before venturing out again.

So that's what this project is all about:  taking a three-channel bird with no ailerons and adapting to four-channel flight.  And that Wasp - hey, it's gone too!  These little birds scream for electric power systems!  So off with the Wasp and on with a LiPo setup!

It was an interesting project, and very gratifying!  She flies like a charm now, and I am very, very happy with the results.  I learned a few things too, like the benefits of using Ultracote for covering.  Follow with me on this project, and perhaps you'll be inspired!
