| I
hit a big milestone yesterday. The plane is framed up and ready
to finish. I will probably go over it with another round of
filling and sanding, but after that I am ready to start the
fiberglass. The plan with the finishing is to first seal the plane with sanding sealer. Then comes the fiberglass with waterbased polyurethane. The polyurethane is (supposedly) quick, easy, cheap and less toxic than the epoxy. I understand that it takes quite a few coats to fill the fiberglass weave, but it works really well. I've never tried this technique before, so I'm a bit nervous. Here goes nothing. |
The wing fillets took a while to get to fit the way I wanted them to, but once they are properly cut, they go into place easily. |

| I
love fiberglassing. It is soooo much easier than covering.
This is my first attempt and I think that it is fairly
fool-proof. I just apply a coat of sanding sealer, let dry.
Then lay the fiberglass over the area and put the polycrylic on. |
It
goes on in one thin layer, so I will have to apply 4-5 coats I'm
guessing. For the edges, just wet the cloth around the corner and
let it dry. Once dry, come back with a sharp knife and it cuts
neat and clean to make a nice edge. |

| I wish I knew about this fiberglassing thing a long time ago. The plane is fully glassed in this shot and ready for subsequent coats. |
